4 artists wanted for participatory artists’ book project in schools

As part of Tell Us Another One, Cartwheel Arts is looking for 4 artists to facilitate a project with Year 7 young people in a Rochdale school, from mid-April to June 2012. Each artist will work with two different classes for about 7 sessions each, and will shape how those classes respond to the project theme. Note that some of the classes don’t meet weekly – the school has a fortnightly timetable structure, so you might do 4 sessions one week and 2 the next.

The theme:

Participants will research local archives for news stories from the past, and work imaginatively with these to invent legends or ghost stories based on them. They will then work in pairs/small groups to create artists’ books about the legend they have invented.  The project will explore elements of local history and storytelling; how myths and stories grow up around real events; and the artist’s book as a form.

We’re interested in concepts like the use of found objects, altered books, chapbooks, collage, zines, comics, and more. We’re also interested in material that can be reproduced in some way – this might mean something that can actually be printed or copied, or it might mean creating something more sculptural, and photographing it to create a catalogue or book about the work.

You will need:

Pay: £90 per session.

To apply, send your CV, and either a link to your website or up to 3 images of your work, to:  vik@cartwheelarts.org.uk

Closing date – Mon Jan 30th 2012, 12 noon
